Use tools such as Google Keyword Planner and SEMrush to identify the keywords that your competitors are targeting. Also just spending time on Google searching using your target keywords and see who is outranking you. Try to understand why. What content do they have, are they writing articles about their products and services, and what pages do they have on their website?

Use the information gathered in the steps above to identify the keywords that are relevant to your business and target audience. You can also use tools such as Google's autocomplete feature and keyword research tools to generate a list of keywords.

Squarespace will automatically create a page title and description based on your on-page content for that particular page so you will need to complete the ‘SEO TITLE (OPTIONAL)’ and ‘SEO DESCRIPTION (OPTIONAL)’ fields with your custom written content - see below.

Tips for Writing Effective Page Titles and Descriptions

When writing your page titles and descriptions, it's important to keep in mind that search engines have a limited character count for display in search results across various devices. Whilst there is no practical limit on how long they can be, Google will truncate them over a certain length so it’s always better to optimise them and make the best use of the space that you know you will likely have available rather than leave this to chance.

As there are slightly different ‘rules’ for Titles and Descriptions let’s tackle them separately.

Page Titles - There is a great article on Search Engine Land covering this topic for 2023 and it’s worth reading, What should the title tag length be in 2023? Whilst this article dives into the weeds a bit, the key takeaway is to limit your page titles to 55-60 characters to ensure you are in the sweet spot. You will read that you can go up to 70 but my advice would be to use this sparingly, or even better, try it out and see how it works for you once your target page is indexed.

Page Meta Descriptions - This is where we need to talk about ‘Snippets’, I recommend reading this article from Google - Control your snippets in search results. Snippets are the main areas of text shown under your page title in Google search results. The main thing to be aware of is that Google will not always show your page description IF they think they think there is something on the page that’s better to display;

Google will sometimes use the meta name=”description” tag from a page to generate a snippet in search results, if we think it gives users a more accurate description than would be possible purely from the on-page content.

Make sure your descriptions are truly descriptive. Because meta descriptions aren’t displayed in the pages the user sees, it’s easy to let this content slide. But high-quality descriptions can be displayed in Google’s search results, and can go a long way to improving the quality and quantity of your search traffic.

There are a ton of new AI-powered content writing tools available such as Jasper and ChatGPT that can help you write engaging content. These can be good for writing well-optimised page titles and descriptions too. There are literally dozens of content writing tools out there but if you are already inspired to write then my main recommendation would be to just use Grammarly. Grammarly is great online writing assistant and can help pick up simple errors that you might otherwise miss. It does has a free option that covers most things but also has some premium features that offer more advanced grammar checking options among other things. If you are writing a ton of content, or plan to, then they will have an option that meets your needs.

If you are struggling to write content for whatever reason then I’d recommend looking at some content writing tools such as Jasper which is an AI Content Writing Tool or ChatGPT which is a more generic AI tool but can be awesome for generating content or even content ideas. You may need to budget for these tools but most have monthly subscriptions or a free tier so you’ve always got the option to use them when you need them rather than commit to long-term subscriptions - they all offer a good level of flexibility so check them out and see what suits you.

10. Create a Custom 404 Page

Creating a custom 404 page on a Squarespace website can be a useful tool for improving the user experience and helping to boost your website's SEO. A custom 404 page can help to reduce frustration for visitors who have landed on a broken or incorrect link, and it can also help to direct them back to your main website, improving their chances of finding the information they need.

Here's how to create a custom 404 page on Squarespace:

  1. Go to your Squarespace website's Home Menu and click on the "Pages" option.

  2. Create a new page in the Not Linked section of your Pages panel.

  3. Now you can customise the page to your liking, using your own text and images although it’s a good idea to include the content on the Squarespace default 404 page as well. Make sure to include a search bar and some links to your most important pages, such as your homepage and contact page, to help visitors find what they're looking for.

  4. To boost your Squarespace SEO, consider adding keywords related to your website and relevant content to your 404 Error Page, so for this website as an example I might include "squarespace seo expert" or "seo for squarespace".

  5. Once you’ve designed your custom 404 page, go back to the Design panel, and click on the "404 Page".

  6. On the 404 Error / Page Not Found page, you can change your 404 Error page from the System Default to the page you just created. Click on the drop down menu and select the custom 404 error page you just created.

  7. After making your changes, don't forget to save your changes.

Squarespace Custom 404 pages and SEO

If you build a custom 404 page in Squarespace, you might see a "Soft 404" alert when you verify your site with Google Search console. This doesn't mean there's an issue with your site or its visibility to search engines. Google flags these pages because they see a contradiction: an indexable page that says it doesn't exist. You can learn more in Google's documentation. To remove the alert use no-index tags to hide the custom 404 page from search engines. To do this go to the Page Settings for your new custom 404 page, select ‘SEO’ and click the ‘Hide Page from Search Results’ option. Don’t forget to click ‘Save’.
